However, the coast is not only ideal for children, but there are also many exciting water sports available for more intrepid adults. There are both public and private beaches, but even the private beaches are relatively inexpensive. And, of course, seaside towns offer an enticing range of restaurants and bars to the hungry visitor.

Le Marche is justifiably famous for the extraordinary number of historic theatres that exist in the region, and has the highest concentration of theatres in the world. There were at one time over a hundred functioning theatres, but sadly many of them are derelict and some have been partially renovated but are not yet fit for use.
However, there are still 70 gems of theatres in use, and a further 40 which can be visited, dating from as early as the 16th century. This large number is unparalleled, given that the population of the region is only around a million and a half!
The reason for this abundance is the economic and cultural boom that took place in the 1700s. The people of Le Marche are extremely proud of their cultural heritage and they have every reason to be. So many internationally celebrated figures throughout history have been nurtured in this culturally rich climate.

Le Marche is justifiably famous for the extraordinary number of historic theatres that exist in the region, and has the highest concentration of theatres in the world. There were at one time over a hundred functioning theatres, but sadly many of them are derelict and some have been partially renovated but are not yet fit for use.
However, there are still 70 gems of theatres in use, and a further 40 which can be visited, dating from as early as the 16th century. This large number is unparalleled, given that the population of the region is only around a million and a half!
The reason for this abundance is the economic and cultural boom that took place in the 1700s. The people of Le Marche are extremely proud of their cultural heritage and they have every reason to be. So many internationally celebrated figures throughout history have been nurtured in this culturally rich climate.

The Frasassi caves are located in the municipality of Genga, province of Ancona, Marche. The Frasassi Caves are an extraordinary series of underground caves which extend for 35km, and form the largest underground cave system in Europe. This subterranean world of calcareous rock formations dates back 180 million years! These incredible caves were first opened to the public in 1974 and have since been visited by over ten million people. The temperature inside is 14C but there is 90 percent humidity so it doesn’t feel cold. On a hot summer day it can be a welcome relief to plunge into this strange, beautiful subterranean world.

The legend of Paolo and Francesca has been inspiration to poets and artists throughout history, beginning most notably with Dante in the Inferno of the Divina Commedia. It concerned the beautiful young Francesca da Polenta, who was married off to the elderly and ugly Lord of Gradara, Giovanni Malatesta, for political reasons. She was often left alone in the castle for long periods, reading French romantic novels in company with her husband’s young and handsome brother, Paolo. Giovanni, or Gianciotto, discovered them ‘in flagrante’ and murdered them both. He flung his brother’s body into one of the wells of the castle, and his beloved wife’s body was placed in an ancient sarcophagus. Five centuries later a sarcophagus was unearthed which is believed to be the original resting place of poor Francesca.
Le Marche region offers visitors an amazing and diverse architectural heritage dating back to the Roman Empire.

One of the most impressive Roman sites (dating from the first and second centuries A.D.) is the necropolis consisting of hundreds of caves and niches for funerary urns dug out of the rock face in an area known as ‘Li grotti’.To date this is the only region where Roman burial sites of this nature have been discovered. There are other similar sites at nearby Massignano, Campofilone and other neighbouring towns. These grottoes certainly indicate that the population of the area had expanded greatly and these ‘grottoes’ were dug in order to accommodate the ‘overspill’ of the necropolis from the Menocchia valley. This would have coincided with the dramatic growth, in size and significance, of the Centurian port of Cupraromana (now Cupra Marittima)

Daphne de Luca is a highly qualified and extremely experienced conservator, teacher, editor and author, and sits on the boards of many illustrious organisations concerned with cultural heritage. Her field of expertise includes not only techniques and materials used in conservation, but also art history. Through her scientific research projects she has developed a deep understanding of the technical aspects of the work of many of the Grand Masters from Italy, (including Giotto, Masaccio, Federico Barocci, Adolfo de Carolis etc.) At the moment she is focusing on the Polyptych by the Venetian painter, Carlo Crivelli (1430?-1494?), whose work you may find in Montefiore dell’Aso. She is currently organising an international convention on the artist, planned for 2021
She has recently published a monogram, ‘Il polittico di Carlo Crivelli a Montefioredell’Aso.’ This magnificent polyptych was painted for the church of Saint Francis in Montefiore, but was unfortunately later dismantled, and some panels ended up in various museums around the world.
This volume presents the history of the numerous dismantlings, (and the attitude to cultural heritage that this reveals), from that perpetrated by the Franciscan monks in the 19th century, up to the last attempt by the Comune (Local Council) to sell off the remaining panels. This was rejected by the Education Board in February 1908.
The book is above all dedicated to Crivelli´s painting techniques as revealed by scientific research. He regarded his paintings like the work of a goldsmith, in which gold and silver is used to add a sumptuous quality to Venetian brocaded velvet. The polyptych consists not only of paintings of extraordinary beauty, but also craftsmanlike creations of enormous quality.
The six panels which remain in the town museum pay testament to what was indisputably one of the most impressive works painted by the Venetian Master.

Sir Moses Haim Montefiore,(1784 -1885) was the most famous British Jew of his time, a true philanthropist, successful financier, stockbroker and banker of the 19th century. His Italian origins with the Le Marche region are certain and we have growing evidence to suggest that the family came originally from Montefiore dell’Aso from whence originates the name. In 1563 the Montefiore family moved to Ancona, capital of the Marche region and a main trading port on the Adriatic Sea. Ancona was the oldest and the most significant centre for the Jewish community in Italy dating as far back as the 10th century. From Ancona the Montefiore family migrated to Livorno (Leghorn, Tuscany) where Sir Moses Montefiore was born in 1784. As a young man he moved with his family to London.
He came from an ancient Sephardic Jewish family which fled to Italy from Spain in the 14th century. We have two artefacts connecting Sir Moses with the Marche region. The first is his family coat of arms, based on an embroidered ark curtain made for the synagogue in Ancona in 1620 by Rachel Olivetti of Pesaro for her husband Judah Leon Montefiore (see last picture). The second is a 1741 manuscript, naming its original owner as, ‘Joseph, the son of the old sage Jacob Montefiore of Pesaro,’ son-in-law of Isaac Alconstantin, Ancona's chief rabbi at the time.
Philanthropy, religious toleration, combating hatred, persecution, fanaticism and slavery worldwide were at the centre of Montefiore's interests. For example, a loan raised by his company enabled the abolition of slavery in the Empire by compensating plantation owners. He donated large sums of money to promote industry, education and health. In 1837 Moses was awarded the title of Sheriff of London, and in 1838 he was given a knighthood, and then a Baronetcy, for his services to humanitarian causes.

Valeria Egidi Morpurgo was one of those people who leave an indelible mark on everyone who had the good fortune to know her. She was born in 1947 and, after graduating in philosophy from the University of Turin in 1972 she specialised in Psychology at the Cattolica University in Milan. So began her professional life, which was dedicated to exploring the most vulnerable areas of the human psyche, and investigating questions connected with the ethics of individual responsibility in situations where historical events brought about collective tragedy.
Her colleague and friend Anna Ferruta wrote this about her:
´The capacity to clearly observe and powerfully denounce the great historical tragedies of the last century make the work of Valeria that of a participating witness, who is not satisfied with observing these human outrages with indifference, but adds life and a voice to them.´
As a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, she managed to have particularly empathetic relationships with her clients, who were often prisoners in their own solitude. Some of the areas that she focused on in her books and addresses to international conferences were the following; Developmental years and maturity, collective historical trauma, alcoholism,
Nazism, narcissism, listening to pain, resisting hatred, hero and antihero, intimacy in the analytic relationship, prejudice, racism and antisemitism.
Her second husband was the neuropsychiatrist and psychoanalyst Enzo Morpurgo, who came from Jewish origins, and who became a first person witness of the Jewish culture.
For many years she was involved in the organisation of the ´Day of Memory´ in Milan, which invited significant figures from different cultures worldwide. She edited the series ‘Psychoanalysis, Psychotherapy and the Psychoanalytic´ for the publishing house Franco Angeli which had been jointly founded with Enzo Morpurgo.
Valeria, who was described by the New York psychoanalyst Audrey Kavka, as ´a warm,generous, vibrant soul´ passed away on 2nd November 2019 ———————————————

This huge heavy bronze bell known
as “Il Campanone” (the big bell) was cast by the award-winning bell foundry Giuseppe Pasqualini & Sons in 1764 and is housed in the civic clock tower of Montefioredell’Aso in Piazza della Repubblica.
A detailed inscription in four lines runs round the upper part of the top of the bell. The inscription lists the names of the town’s most influential families including Mozzoni, Egidi and Barlocci.
The foundry of Giuseppe Pasqualini & Sons, born in Montedinove (province of Ascoli Piceno) in the early 17th century, moved to Fermo in 1912, where it established itself successfully for over half a century until 1976.
From 1920 to 1975 the Pasqualini foundry became one of the most prestigious and famous bell foundries in Italy from Venice to Sicily.
The foundry’s flagship bell was La Campana delle Laudi installed in Torre del Popolo, Piazza del Comune,Assisi.
This extraordinary bell was cast in 1926 on the occasion of the 7th century of the death of Saint Francis
engraved with the Canticle of the Creatures. It has a diameter of 6ft and weighs 4 tons!
